Hey folks. Just a quick update sharing my thoughts about potential radiation exposure in the U.S. from the March 2011 Nuclear reactor problems in Japan following the earthquake. It doesn’t appear that thus far the radiation will make it to the U.S. in strong enough concentrations to worry about. But just in case, there is a LOT of misinformation on the web. And a decent compilation of preventive measures can be found on this site near the end of the page:

Nori Beds in Japan

I always recommend these days using supplements as little as possible. This article is heavy on recommending supplements. Read between the lines, and try to find the SOURCE of those supplements in food, and eat that instead. This is true UNLESS you’re dealing with a serious acute health issue, in which high doses of a supplement may be called for. But for general daily preventive maintenance, stick to real food.

If you’re very scared you can have some potassium iodide on hand. But you could also use this as an opportunity to get educated about preventive anti-radiation and anti-cancer measures to take on a daily basis.

Here is a short list of some easy things you can do today to strengthen your system and protect yourself from the radiation you’re exposed to every day:

  • Add more seaweed to your diet. An easy way is to get Nori and make sushi Nori rolls at home. Or get some dulse and sprinkle it on your salad.
  • Eat your cruciferous vegetables like broccoli.
  • Add coconut oil and coconut cream (coconut concentrated) to your diet.
  • Limit your consumption of any oil that isn’t olive oil or coconut oil.
  • Limit your consumption of refined flour and sugar. Stick to unrefined sweeteners and whole grains.
  • Drink green tea or white tea.
  • And most of all – listen to your body’s intuition!

Take good care.

This 2009 study shows a link between Vitamin D and the body’s immune system, with a focus on the body’s ability to fight off upper respiratory infections: http://archinte.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/169/4/384

Your doctor can test you for Vitamin D deficiency. It is safe to say that if you live in a part of the world with limited days of sunlight, like the Pacific Northwest, or Great Lakes areas, that a regular vitamin D supplement will be necessary. It is not unusual for a vitamin D deficient person to need a higher dose of 5,000 IU per day in order to have optimal levels.

Dr. John Cannell discusses Vitamin D here:

It seems that as usual, we’ve been misled about the benefits of dairy. The status quo tells us that milk and dairy products are good for us because of the amount of calcium and Vitamin D. But recent studies show that there is no link between an increase in dairy intake and decreases in bone disease. And not only that, but  in a WHO/FAO Expert Consultation had this to conclude:

“To date, the accumulated data indicate that the adverse effect of protein, in particular animal (but not vegetable) protein, might outweigh the positive effect of calcium intake on calcium balance.”

In fact it looks like the more meat and dairy one eats, the higher the risk for bone disease. For more information, start with this informative article on VegSource. The article includes links to many supporting documents that you may find useful.

I spoke with a client at Houston Buyers Club about his high blood pressure. He’s tried many supplements, but swears by PeptAce Fish Peptides. And in tests he monitors with his doctor, he gets noticeably good results. When he stops taking the fish peptides, his blood pressure rises again. So if you have high blood pressure, give this product a try, and monitor your blood pressure with your doc.

I work for a popular online supplement store that also has a store front in Houston, Tx called Houston Buyers Club. A friend there shared that calcium supplements and coral calcium isn’t as effective as taking silica. He also recommends horsetail and nettle to increase calcium. Has anyone had any experience that corroborates this claim? All comments welcome.

Once I was listening to a radio show in Chicago and heard some folks who claimed that it was “un-American” to abstain from eating hot dogs. “Just eat a hot dog,” they said. “Hot dogs are good,” they asserted. Well it turns out that what many of us have known in our guts for years is true : hot dogs are not only not good – they’re terrible.

After a review of more than 7,000 clinical studies, The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) points out a distinct link between the consumption of processed meats (including bacon, hot dogs, sandwich meat, packaged ham, pepperoni, salami and virtually all red meat used in frozen prepared meals) and several types of cancer, including pancreatic cancer, which my grandmother died of at the young age of 65 – she ate summer sausage salami almost daily.
